What is HCE?

Home & Community Education

It was first known as Home Bureau Federation, for farm wives. Today, standing approximately 11,000 members strong statewide, we are the Monroe County Home & Community Education. Our goal is to provide education to promote social and economic well being in our homes, neighborhoods and communities. We are not our Mother’s Home Bureau anymore.

Through the years, our organization has changed to continue to progress with the current times, trends and needs. HCE continues to cross the boundaries when providing unique, wholesome and  inventive ideas for our lessons and programs, providing members the opportunity to learn current and relevant information.

Our Mission Statement
The Illinois Association for Home and Community Education enhances the lives of individuals and families through quality educational programs and experiences encouraging responsible leadership and service to the community.

An Aim for the Homemaker
Even though a lot has changed since 1919, these core ideas for creating, improving and maintaining your home, neighborhoods and communities, still stand strong. These are the things, even today, that we all seem to look for in one form or another.
To have the home...
  • Economically sound
  • Mechanically convenient
  • Physically healthful
  • Morally wholesome
  • Mentally stimulating
  • Artistically satisfying
  • Socially responsible
  • Spiritually inspiring
  • Founded upon mutual
      affection and respect
